NO CHOICES NO TESCO

Tesco are coming to town! As many of you will be aware, Tesco have recently acquired the Choices site with a view to opening a Metro Store in the near future. With a large store less than half a mile away in the Old Town, this proposed development is unwarranted, unwanted and will have a dramatic negative impact on a number of local businesses.

Tesco’s 2007 Corporate Governance statement says that they will consult with the local community and businesses before opening a new store, this has not happened. A Tesco spokesperson recently stated to the Bucks Examiner that they would fill a gap by providing a convenience store for the local community! As there is a recently refurbished Londis just next door to the Choices site, and we have an excellent provision of sandwich bars, florists, greengrocers and butchers, one can only draw the conclusion that their interest lies not in serving the local community, but more in grabbing more of the local market by forcing independent traders out of business. This will result in less choice locally and could well discourage new businesses from opening up in the area.

Fact:There are currently fourteen Tesco stores within a ten mile radius of Amersham, this will rise to eighteen if this development and the proposals for stores in Gerrards Cross, Little Chalfont and Holmer Green go ahead.

A Tesco store in this location is likely to lead to greater traffic congestion and parking problems, however, as the Choices site was already a retail unit, there is nothing that the Council can presently do to prevent the opening.
